Protect your business with EUIPO’s anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy technology guide

The new guide offers comprehensive, practical resources to protect intellectual property from counterfeiting and piracy.

In today’s competitive market, protecting your business from counterfeiting and piracy is crucial. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has launched the Anti-Counterfeiting and Anti-Piracy Technology Guide (ACAPT) , a valuable tool that allows business owners to explore a knowledge repository of over 40 anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy technologies, which can assist in safeguarding their intellectual property assets.

Comprehensive and user-friendly

The guide is comprehensive and user-friendly, making it accessible for businesses of all sizes. It includes detailed descriptions of each technology, practical advice on implementation, and some practical examples. Additionally, it offers search functionalities, which allow users to filter by several criteria such as product type (physical or digital) and use of the technology. It also offers downloadable results to help streamline the process of building your IP protection strategy.

Counterfeit detection technologies

There are a total of 46 technologies in the guide, with five main areas which focus on electronic, marking, mechanical, chemical & physical, and technologies for digital media.

Electronic technologies, such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and NFC (Near Field Communication), are highlighted in the guide. These technologies are essential for tracking and authenticating products throughout the supply chain. RFID tags, for instance, can store a vast amount of data about a product, including its origin, date of manufacture, and unique identifiers. This information can be read by RFID readers at various points in the supply chain, ensuring that the product is genuine and has not been tampered with.

Marking technologies, such as security holograms and special inks, provide indicators that a product is authentic. Security holograms, for instance, are difficult to replicate and can be used on products to verify their authenticity visually. These holograms can contain multiple layers of information, making them highly secure. Special inks, such as UV-sensitive inks, change colour under ultraviolet light, providing another layer of security. These inks can be used on packaging or directly on the product to indicate authenticity.

Mechanical technologies include anti-alteration devices, which are designed to prevent tampering with products. These devices can be used on packaging to indicate if a product has been opened or altered in any way. For example, tamper-evident seals break if the product packaging is opened, providing a clear indication of tampering.
The guide also explores chemical and physical technologies, such as DNA coding and laser engraving. DNA coding involves embedding a unique DNA marker within a product or its packaging. This marker is virtually impossible to replicate, providing a high level of security. Laser engraving can be used to mark products with unique identifiers that are difficult to alter or remove. These technologies provide businesses with robust tools to protect their products from counterfeiting.

In the field of digital media, technologies such as digital watermarks and DRM (Digital Rights Management) systems can be crucial for protecting digital products. Digital watermarks embed information within digital files that can be used to verify their authenticity. DRM systems control the use of digital content, preventing unauthorised copying and distribution. These technologies are essential for businesses that deal with digital products, such as software, music, and video.

An indispensable resource for businesses

The guide goes beyond just detailing individual technologies by including shared ledger technologies and ISO standards to enhance anti-counterfeiting strategies. This holistic approach provides a comprehensive toolkit for intellectual property protection and business security against counterfeiters.

The Anti-Counterfeiting and Anti-Piracy Technology Guide is an indispensable resource for businesses looking for options to safeguard their products and services from counterfeiting and piracy. With its broad spectrum of detailed technologies and practical implementation strategies, this guide assists business owners in developing an effective IP protection strategy tailored to their unique needs.
